Weekly Update 04/19/10

April 19th, 2010

Hey everyone!

IT’S TIME FOR THE LAST AD CLUB MEETING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR! :D Isn’t that exciting and awesome and kind of terrifying all at the same time?…

—NEXT MEETING—
Our LAST MEETING of the year will be tomorrow (April 20th) at 7 PM in CARROLL 283 - this room is on the second floor of the J-School.

We will be having ELECTIONS and a super special duo for our last speakers of the year: CEO Michael Hubbard and Social Media Strategist Morgan Siem of Media Two Interactive will be gracing our halls with their presence! For some background research of your own, check out: http://www.mediatwo.net/ And Media Two was recently named the #8 top advertising agency in the Triangle. That’s saying something considering they’re a small shop that specializes in interactive!

For those of you particularly interested in interactive/social media, I would highly recommend that you check out Media Two’s blog and their twitterfeeds. I’m not linking to those in this email, though, you lazy bums. You can get it from their landing page….

Anyway! Make sure you come to this last meeting and have your say in the elections, as well use this opportunity to meet one of the most awesomest CEOs I have ever known! This meeting will be super informal and fun. And to top it all off: Morgan is a UNC J-school grad!

COME ON OUT! And be there early! I’m aiming to get us some pizza for our very last meeting…:)

—NYU’s ITP—
Considering portfolio school? Consider yourself a little to tech-y or wanting something a little more interactive? Check on NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. Their program’s a breeding ground for tech advances - most recently Dodgeball, the precursor to Foursquare, which developed from a student’s master thesis there.

Check it out here: http://itp.nyu.edu/itp/

—OGILVY COOL STUFF—
“Fresh off Ogilvy’s 10th floor, check out the Search for the World’s Greatest Salesperson.

The winner receives:

- a three month fellowship at Ogilvy & Mather
- $30,000
- and a trip to Cannes, France.”

Yeah, not much to this email. I’ll probably send out one last weekly update next week with some sweet parting words or….something. But seriously: everyone come out for elections and our spectacular last guests for the 2009-2010 school year. And seriously: there’s probably going to be pizza. First come, first serve. So SERIOUSLY!: get your butt out to this great meeting and have your say in the elections.

And here is a happy use of social media to do good in the world: http://mashable.com/2010/04/17/social-good-micro-lending/http://mashable.com/2010/04/17/social-good-micro-lending/ I absolutely love Free Rice, personally. And this is a great, happy…very random link to end the email on.

SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW! If I don’t see you there personally I will be sad :/ At the very least, come see off the 2009-2010 Ad Club Exec Board as we make way for the stellar 2010-2011 Exec Board!

Thanks everyone!

Weekly Update 04/05/10

April 7th, 2010

Hey everyone!

Gonna get right to the chase…after that game…march madness just turned into march sadness…

—MEETING THIS WEEK—
MEETING THIS WEEK: CANCELED

We were supposed to have a meeting this week. April was going to be a presidents/CEO-meeting-extraordinaire…thing…sort of like February/March was portfolio-visitors-extraordinaire month..but unfortunately, our guest who was supposed to attend on Wednesday has had an emergency come up.

On the bright side, we still have a CEO of an agency coming by later this month! But our last meeting for the semester is up in the air right now depending on the CEO’s schedule. I’ll let everyone know ASAP :)

As for elections: they will take place at the end of our last meeting. The elected Exec Board will then be expected to stay afterwards to discuss roles for next year and begin preparing for the exciting upcoming year!

Expect the next meeting to be either next week (the week of the 11th) or the week after (the week of the 18th). Everyone’s gonna need that week before exams to prepare :)

—HEELPRINT APPLICATIONS—
If you don’t know about it…well, UNC has its very own student-run agency now and it will be going into its second year of existence next semester.

If you were involved or want to get involved, however, you need to realize that it’s going to be a lot more exclusive and a lot smaller next year!

“Since the year is winding down, the Exec Board has been talking about changes for next year. We are going to make everyone reapply, and will probably only be taking about 20 staffers. I’ve attached the application and a promotional flier for you to look over. If you have any questions, please let me know! I hope a lot of you will reapply for Heelprint. I think that with a smaller team Heelprint will be easier to manage and you guys can get a feel for how a real agency works. ”

Make sure you apply ASAP! Send applications to heelprintcomm@gmail.com

—DTH MARKETING GROUP—
Apply for the Daily Tar Heel Marketing Group!

The Daily Tar Heel is recruiting six undergraduates who are interested in advertising, marketing and event planning for the 2010-2011 school year.

The DTH Marketing Team consists of 9 undergraduate students, whose main goal is to increase the readership of the online and print versions of the DTH in unique and innovative ways. The team conducts focus groups, develops advertising campaigns for DTH sponsored events and analyzes campus-wide surveys, in order to better serve the newspaper.

Strategic and creative minds are welcomed.

You can download the pdf version from the attachment or pick one up at the DTH office. Applications are due no later than Friday, April 9, 2010 to the DTH office.

—BRANDING YOURSELF—
BRANDING YOURSELF: HOW TO FIND YOUR RELEVANT DIFFERENTIATION TO STAND OUT IN THE CROWD:

Joe Pantigoso, a marketing communications specialist and former managing director at Landor Associates, a leading brand strategy and design consultancy, will speak on the value of strategic branding for individuals looking to get hired in a crowded market place with increasingly fewer jobs.

* 4:00 - 5:00 pm
* 239B Hanes Hall
(Sponsored by the Ad Club! Woot woot…)

——

Sorry about canceling the meeting this week! Hopefully you’ll all understand. And once I hear from the CEO…everyone can set aside that date for our LAST MEETING OF THE AD CLUB FOR 2009-2010! It’s gonna be awesomely wonderful.

But as all of you start gearing up for summer internships/jobs/searching for the aforementioned things…make sure you check out this article:

Make sure you know what’s going on. Be informed as you enter the internship/job world!

See you all soon!

Weekly Update 03/29/10

March 29th, 2010

Hey everyone!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend! For the geeks on the listserv -  well, lets just say a certain President of the Ad Club got to spend her weekend in Boston for PAX East 2010…be jealous if you have any idea of what that is. For the rest of you, though: basically I just geeked out this entire weekend and played video games for hours. :) Then got sick from being around said geeks for the entire weekend. :( But it was worth it! :)

Regardless, hope it was great for everyone and I hope the chance of rain didn’t scare you off from enjoying this beautiful day!

—NEXT MEETING—
Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 7th. More information will come next week - just try to set some time aside around 7 PM on the 7th!

—AWESOME BRANDING PROGRAM—

—INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY—
Ummm. If you haven’t heard of University Directories by now then you aren’t on the JOMC careers listserv or don’t pay attention to all the messages they send out seeking interns or you live under a rock. Once again, they’re looking for more interns:

“If you are interested in applying for a position, please email your resume to me at cthompson@vilcom.com and I will get in touch with you to schedule an interview. I will be conducting interviews in the next couple of weeks so please follow up with me as soon as possible. Feel free to give me a call at or 800-743-5556 x6121 if you have questions about our internship program.

Here is a brief job description:

—RUNNING FOR AD CLUB EXEC BOARD—
Interested in playing a bigger role in Ad Club next year? Send me an email! Lets chat it up! We’ll have elections during one of the April meetings (we’ll be having two meetings next month) - hopefully on April 7th. The positions are:

President
Vice President
Treasurer
Secretary

In general, the brief run-down is as follows:

President: manage listserv, coordinate meetings, delegate tasks to exec board, represent the Ad Club with the AAF-RDU and at other events on/off campus, help coordinate the annual AWNY trip, help coordinate the annual Symposium
Vice President: assist President in all afore-mentioned tasks, represent President when they are unable to attend meetings, serve as a contact point for new members, help coordinate AWNY trip/Symposium
Treasurer: manage funds for the club, keep track of receipts and expenses, send off dues to the AAF, help coordinate AWNY trip/Symposium
Secretary: take notes of meetings, (next year:) manage social media, help coordinate AWNY trip/Symposium

This year we planned to split AWNY/Symposium help between Treasurer and Secretary so perhaps that’s how it can work next year.

If you have any questions at all, please email me and I can meet up in person to talk with you about the roles for next year. I’m sure I’m missing some stuff off the top of my head….but there’s just a general gist of what the Exec Board does and how you can be involved.

Time commitment-wise, the President will devote the most time as I generally spend about 5 hours a week for Ad Club stuff….more when it’s a meeting week and the most during AWNY/Symposium. The other positions are a lot more lax, though, so don’t be afraid to toss your hat into the ring!

And on the bright side: as one last contribution to the UNC-Ad Club under my presidency, I will be working on a gigantic book at the end of this year to help future Exec Boards with managing the club. I’ll be working closely with previous president Ben Fisher as well as advisors Professor Hester and Professor Sweeney to set a solid foundation for future years. So if you’re a little worried and think you might want to run for an office but you’re not sure how AWNY set-up goes or how to manage the listserv: don’t worry! I’ll be personally able to help you next year and this book will be a great compendium on how to do stuff, when to do stuff, etc.

So…if you’re interested in running, give me the following information:

Position I’m interested in:
Why I’m interested in running:
What my pitch will be on Election Night:
(aka..what’s your unique value proposition? ;D What can you bring to the table that others might not have to offer?)

And then ask any questions or let me know if you’d like to meet in person to discuss it all. For the record: DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SPEAK UP! Even if you’re just the slightest bit interested, let me know and we can talk about what role might be best for you! And we LOVE under-class-men. So seriously. Send message and lets talk!

——

That’s all for this week! I hope you all have a lovely week and…well, now I’m off to go sleep soon. I’ve taken my Sudafed for the evening so..uh…hopefully this email makes sense. If not, well, I totally blame those little red pills.

For my random link of the week: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattw/single-ladies-motown-version-arl

It’s totally stuck in my head. And I totally like it better than the original.

Have a great week everyone! :)

—LAST MEETING—

It’s pretty insightful…although my ranking compared to some celebrities make sme feel a little depressed…

Anyway. Have a great week, everyone, and get pumped about spring break! It’s just around the corner. Promise. :)

Weekly Update 02/08/10 - Internship Panel Bios

Internship Panel Bios!

Julia Stanton
I’ve done creative at an ad agency in brazil and project management in brownstein group philadelphia! About my best carolina experience was living abroad for sure!

Tiffany Blosser
My first internship was with UNC Press last summer. I was a subsidiary rights and contracts intern, which was responsible for selling the rights to a book to other publishers for translation, using excerpts in another publishing, etc. Basically I did a lot of admin work, faxed invoices, mailed contracts and books, emailed authors, and filed A LOT! It was unpaid, and I worked 2-3 days a week for the whole summer. My second internship was with Jennings & Co., a smaller local ad agency. They worked primarily with clients in the health care industry (like UNC Cancer) but also had clients like Catalent and Volvo. As an intern I do everything from helping the COO bring in new business through direct mailings, to working with the PR team write press releases, to assisting the account exec pull market and competitor information for clients. My third and most current internship is with an online email service provider, eWay Direct. This internship I acquired through the ad club when someone from the company came to speak to the ad club. eWay does everything from email marketing, website management, social media and much more and some of their clients are ELF makeup, Avon, and Make-A-Wish. I mainly blog 2-3 times a week on digital and marketing trends, as well as track their website and work with the SEO manager to create links for their websites. These experiences have concreted the fact that I want to be in an ad agency, that I want to work on the account side but also it has opened up a new passion, social media and online marketing, which I hope to grow more with.

My first semester at Carolina was hell. I had panic attacks almost on a regular basis. I almost didn’t come back for the spring semester, but I’m glad I did. :0) It wasn’t until my senior year that I really got involved in the J-school and started heavily pursuing advertising, even in this short time, it’s worked out for me pretty well so far.

Currently, I am a Senior Advertising Account Executive at The Daily Tar Heel, responsible for the advertising of student organizations and departments on campus. This past summer, I worked as an Account Management Intern at BooneOakley, a full-service advertising agency in Charlotte. At BooneOakley, I worked with the Bloom Grocery Store and Visit Charlotte accounts, as well as prepared desk research for the New Business Director. During spring semester of my junior year, I interned at Howard, Merrell & Partners in Raleigh and was on the BASF Plant Science account. After graduating in May, I hope to apply what I learned as an intern and work as an Account Manager in an advertising agency, hopefully in a bigger city. Fun Fact: I transferred to Carolina after my freshman year and was randomly assigned to live with 3 other transfers who have become some of my best friends, and I still live with them (and 2 others) today…with little drama.

Matthew Koester
Matthew Koester (rhymes with “Digester,” which would be a horrible thing to call him), is a senior multimedia major in the J-school. Before last year, he was like many of you: intelligent, wonderfully scented, yet unsure of what to do with his life. Thanks to incredible foresight, though, he knew he wanted a job, which is why he sought out any internships or other opportunities that aligned with his general interests and offered either free food or regularly scheduled bathroom breaks. A taste of Matthew’s résumé reveals a feast of succulent abilities covered with a shimmering glaze of real-world experience…okay, bad metaphor. To the point: Matthew has experience ranging from being the photo editor for Kaleidoscope Magazine, UNC’s student-run campus life and fashion publication, to interning as a graphic designer for the Performance Institute, a management consulting company in D.C., to working on the advertising staff of Heelprint Communications, UNC’s student-run advertising and PR agency. If it’s on his résumé, you can bet he’s done it. A fun fact about Matthew’s time at Carolina: he has developed a habit of privately pretending to be a robot, accompanying his movements with various mechanical sound effects when others aren’t around.

David Enarson
I’m a senior journalism advertising major with a minor in entrepreneurship. My interests and activities include internet marketing, sports photography, ideas and going to the beach. When I was younger I started a company called Varibyte (www.varibyte.com), and I developed Palm handheld software and sold it via the internet. I have interned at Hanes Brands; Contactology, an e-mail marketing software provider; and August Jackson, an experiential events and corporate communications firm. I’ll start with a full time position at August Jackson’s Chicago office after graduating in May.
