Weekly Update 03/15/10

March 20th, 2010

HEY EVERYONE!

Welcome back from Spring Break 2010! :) Hope you all had an absolutely wonderful time…but now…classes ahoy! On the bright side, we’re all halfway through. For some of us…it is official and the senioritis countdown has begun…

—NEXT MEETING—
Ashley Harville, recruiter for the Miami Ad School, will be on campus WEDNESDAY the 17th at 7 PM in CARROLL 143. She has offered to swing by on behalf of the Ad Club to talk about the awesomeness of the Miami Ad School!

This isn’t an official meeting - we won’t have any more meetings this month (March) since our next big thing is the Symposium on the 26th. But if you’re interested in the Miami Ad School (www.miamiadschool.com) make sure to come by and meet Ashley!

I won’t be able to attend (day-long class field-trip! GOING TO A BOBCATS GAME!) but I hope a few people will be able to show up and support our guest.

—6th ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM—
The 6th Annual UNC-Ad Club Symposium is coming up on Friday, March 26th. Find out more information and get your own ticket here:

http://6thadvertisingsymposium.eventbrite.com/

This year we will be charging people $5 per ticket to have a secured seat at the Symposium. The designated on-campus drop-off times/dates for the $5 will be sometime the week of the Symposium. We’re making the Symposium a much more exclusive, quality event this year for the students out there sincerely passionate about the industry.

Panelists will be revealed in the Weekly Update next week. We have an excellent key note and a great variety of local advertisers who are more than happy to share their wisdom.

Make sure you get your ticket asap if you’re interested in: great panelists, internship/job advice, networking with peers, breakfast foods, food in general, getting to informally dine with a professional, and…most importantly…attend one of the finest events offered by the UNC-Ad Club!

—AAF-RDU STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP—
Go to aaf.rdu-org for information on AAF Raleigh-Durham’s 2010 Advertising Scholarship, offered to college students in the Triangle who have declared an advertising- or communications-related major. A UNC-CH student (or several) has won the scholarship every year - lets keep this tradition going!

“If any student has questions or interest in applying, s/he can get additional information as well as the application form at aaf-rdu.org, or contact Frank Manson at fmanson@nc.rr.com.”

The deadline for applications is April 2nd.

——

Hope you all have a lovely week! And on the bright side..if you ARE being affected by senioritis right now…the Onion offers a great alternative to graduation: http://www.theonion.com/content/news/new_college_graduates_to_be?utm_source=onion_rss_daily

See you around! :)

We’re making the Symposium a much more exclusive, quality event this year for the students out there

—AAF-RDU STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP—
Attached is a flyer about the AAF Raleigh-Durham’s 2010 Advertising Scholarship, offered to college students in the Triangle who have declared an advertising- or communications-related major. A UNC-CH student (or several) has won the scholarship every year - lets keep this tradition going! Last year, the Ad Club’s very own Matthew Koester won the grand prize. Yours truly was just a runner-up to such greatness. ;)

“If any student has questions or interest in applying, s/he can get additional information as well as the application form at aaf-rdu.org, or contact Frank Manson at fmanson@nc.rr.com.”

The deadline for applications is April 2nd.

——-

There’s a lot of other stuff going on but first and foremost: ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAK! When it comes. After this crazy, crazy week.

If you have any questions regarding the Ad Club or the Symposium, please either get in touch with Vice President Billy Fuccillo (fuccillo@email.unc.edu) or give me until Friday to respond. I will be undergoing surgery tomorrow and will (hopefully) be on some crazy awesome painkillers for the rest of the week. Therefore, if I do respond
before Friday, my apologies for whatever absurdities appear in the email…

Anyway. Have a great week everyone and a safe spring break! :)

Weekly Update 02/22/10

February 25th, 2010

Hey everyone!

Guess what! Not including today…it’s only ELEVEN DAYS UNTIL SPRING BREAK!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! :)

It’s LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY!

I hope that info brightens everyone’s Monday a little bit. Of course, your Monday should be brightened by the Weekly Update itself. But I figured that such an equally happy reminder couldn’t hurt….

—LAST MEETING—
Attached you will find the absolutely WONDERFUL notes provided by the Ad Club’s own Matthew Koester on how to find an internship! (Senior Panel Handout.pdf) As promised, here are the email addresses for each of the panelists:

Matthew Koester: mkoester@unc.edu
David Enarson: denarson@email.unc.edu
Julia Stanton: sta@email.unc.edu
Tiffany Blosser: tnblosse@email.unc.edu
Mackenzie Gibbs: lmgibbs@email.unc.edu

Another huge thanks to our panelists and an equally huge thanks to everyone that showed up and changed rooms at the last minute! Hooray for the J-School constantly double-booking rooms but a bigger hooray for our ingenuity as a club and stealing a different/more awesome room ;)

—MARKETING CLUB—
If you missed the meeting, you also missed the opportunity to meet Zack Svoboda, President of the BSBA Marketing Club!

Unsure over whether marketing is your thing? Make SURE you check out their club!
http://specials.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/BSBA/marketing/Pages/home.aspx

There are a lot of great jobs and internship opportunities listed on their site and it’s a great way to be informed about marketing club events. Also! Check out their Twitter account here: /twitter.com/KFmarketing

If you want on their listserv (it’s best to cover all of your bases, y’know!) then just email Zack Svoboda at Zack_Svoboda@kenan-flagler.unc.edu

Remember: the Ad Club, the PRSSA, and the Marketing Club are here to serve you all and help you better understand what you might want to pursue professionally after college. If you’re unsure, make sure to check ‘em all out! Consider it the background/market research you do before launching yourself as a brand in a specific industry after you graduate :D How corny but awesome is that?

—INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY—
A former Ad Clubber has reached out on behalf of 22squared, an advertising agency in Atlanta. “We have several unpaid internships available to those that qualify and can receive course credit in exchange for completing the two-month program. The program description, requirements and various disciplines are attached, and you can also find
the information on our blog: blog.22squared.com.”

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 5th. This sounds like an absolutely fantastic opportunity so make sure you check out the attachment and apply! (22squared 2010 Internship Program.pdf)

—ONE SHOW EXHIBIT—
“We wanted to let you all know that we’re bringing the 2009-2010 One Show exhibit to McKinney on 3/18. This is the best of the best advertising in the world and I would think the ad students at UNC would be very interested. On top of that, the Miami Ad School will be doing a presentation on their program right after the One Show exhibit. Doors open at 4:30. Miami Ad School program starts at 6 PM.” See the attachment for more info! (One Show/Miami Ad School.doc)

Personally, my new favorite thing of the week? http://klout.com/ If you’re addicted to Twitter (like I have recently become addicted to and, much like my Farmville/Zynga addiction, I am unashamed)…make sure to check it out and find out about your presence on Twitter! It’s pretty insightful…although my ranking compared to some celebrities make sme feel a little depressed…

Anyway. Have a great week, everyone, and get pumped about spring break! It’s just around the corner. Promise. :)

Weekly Update 02/08/10 - Internship Panel Bios

February 8th, 2010

Internship Panel Bios!

Julia Stanton
I’ve done creative at an ad agency in brazil and project management in brownstein group philadelphia! About my best carolina experience was living abroad for sure!

Tiffany Blosser
My first internship was with UNC Press last summer. I was a subsidiary rights and contracts intern, which was responsible for selling the rights to a book to other publishers for translation, using excerpts in another publishing, etc. Basically I did a lot of admin work, faxed invoices, mailed contracts and books, emailed authors, and filed A LOT! It was unpaid, and I worked 2-3 days a week for the whole summer. My second internship was with Jennings & Co., a smaller local ad agency. They worked primarily with clients in the health care industry (like UNC Cancer) but also had clients like Catalent and Volvo. As an intern I do everything from helping the COO bring in new business through direct mailings, to working with the PR team write press releases, to assisting the account exec pull market and competitor information for clients. My third and most current internship is with an online email service provider, eWay Direct. This internship I acquired through the ad club when someone from the company came to speak to the ad club. eWay does everything from email marketing, website management, social media and much more and some of their clients are ELF makeup, Avon, and Make-A-Wish. I mainly blog 2-3 times a week on digital and marketing trends, as well as track their website and work with the SEO manager to create links for their websites. These experiences have concreted the fact that I want to be in an ad agency, that I want to work on the account side but also it has opened up a new passion, social media and online marketing, which I hope to grow more with.

My first semester at Carolina was hell. I had panic attacks almost on a regular basis. I almost didn’t come back for the spring semester, but I’m glad I did. :0) It wasn’t until my senior year that I really got involved in the J-school and started heavily pursuing advertising, even in this short time, it’s worked out for me pretty well so far.

Mackenzie Gibbs
Currently, I am a Senior Advertising Account Executive at The Daily Tar Heel, responsible for the advertising of student organizations and departments on campus. This past summer, I worked as an Account Management Intern at BooneOakley, a full-service advertising agency in Charlotte. At BooneOakley, I worked with the Bloom Grocery Store and Visit Charlotte accounts, as well as prepared desk research for the New Business Director. During spring semester of my junior year, I interned at Howard, Merrell & Partners in Raleigh and was on the BASF Plant Science account. After graduating in May, I hope to apply what I learned as an intern and work as an Account Manager in an advertising agency, hopefully in a bigger city. Fun Fact: I transferred to Carolina after my freshman year and was randomly assigned to live with 3 other transfers who have become some of my best friends, and I still live with them (and 2 others) today…with little drama.

Matthew Koester
Matthew Koester (rhymes with “Digester,” which would be a horrible thing to call him), is a senior multimedia major in the J-school. Before last year, he was like many of you: intelligent, wonderfully scented, yet unsure of what to do with his life. Thanks to incredible foresight, though, he knew he wanted a job, which is why he sought out any internships or other opportunities that aligned with his general interests and offered either free food or regularly scheduled bathroom breaks. A taste of Matthew’s résumé reveals a feast of succulent abilities covered with a shimmering glaze of real-world experience…okay, bad metaphor. To the point: Matthew has experience ranging from being the photo editor for Kaleidoscope Magazine, UNC’s student-run campus life and fashion publication, to interning as a graphic designer for the Performance Institute, a management consulting company in D.C., to working on the advertising staff of Heelprint Communications, UNC’s student-run advertising and PR agency. If it’s on his résumé, you can bet he’s done it. A fun fact about Matthew’s time at Carolina: he has developed a habit of privately pretending to be a robot, accompanying his movements with various mechanical sound effects when others aren’t around.

David Enarson
I’m a senior journalism advertising major with a minor in entrepreneurship. My interests and activities include internet marketing, sports photography, ideas and going to the beach. When I was younger I started a company called Varibyte (www.varibyte.com), and I developed Palm handheld software and sold it via the internet. I have interned at Hanes Brands; Contactology, an e-mail marketing software provider; and August Jackson, an experiential events and corporate communications firm. I’ll start with a full time position at August Jackson’s Chicago office after graduating in May.

Weekly Update 02/08/10

February 8th, 2010

Hey everyone!

Hope you’re all having a great week already! Looking forward to an…interesting..match-up this Wednesday. Hoping for the best from our team, at least! :) I remain optimistic…

—ART & COPY—
You’re invited to join the AAF-RDU on March 10th at 6 PM at the Rialto Theater in Raleigh for a very special screening of the award-winning documentary /ART & COPY/, a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for “Just Do It,” “I Love NY,” “Where’s the
Beef?,” “Got Milk,” “Think Different,” and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.

After the film, we’ll have a special Q&A session with David Baldwin, Executive Producer and former Chief Creative Officer at McKinney.

David Baldwin – Executive Producer

David is the founder of Baldwin&, a creative practice in Durham, NC. Over his career he has worked for some of the best creative agencies in the world like Della Femina, Travisano & Partners, NY; Hal Riney, SF; Cole & Weber, Portland; Deutsch, NY; Leonard/Monahan, Providence, RI;
and McKinney, where he served as executive creative director for the previous 10 years. He has created and overseen some of the most talked about work in advertising over the last few decades on such brands as Audi, Sony, Travelocity, Dr. Martens, IKEA, Virgin Mobile and Polaroid. He is also one of the most award-winning creative directors and copywriters in the business today, having won literally hundreds of awards, including 18 One Show pencils, numerous medals and finalists in Cannes, Communication Arts Annuals, MPA Kelly awards, ANDYs, Clios, and many others. David also served for five years as the Chairman of the Board of the One Club, the organization behind one of advertising’s preeminent award shows, The One Show. As well as advertising, David is a guitarist/songwriter for the band, Pants!

Lots of great stuff in this email..you better read it again to let it all sink in! :D

You read it again, right? Great! Well..I could end this email with some witty comment about all of the Superbowl ads or what ones I liked (if you were following me on twitter, you probably heard enough during my real-time play-by-play) and what ones I didn’t like or one of the many articles out there with elite opinions on them all…but instead…here’s a video of a shark eating an underwater camera! (http://www.buzzfeed.com/minjaeormes/tiger-shark-eats-reefcam-ohu watch from 2:00 onwards)

Hooray for something completely different. ;) While it can be fun to talk about Superbowl ads in all of your classes…sometimes it’s good to take a break. Hope you all have a wonderful week and I’ll see you at the next meeting!

Weekly Update 02/01/10

And for those of you who have lots of accounts on different sites and stuff…check out this pretty sad but informative article:
http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/01/21/depressing-analysis-of-rockyou-hacked-passwords/

Companies will be expecting us, the “digital natives” of the world, to be tech savvy. So here’s a lesson for all of us: part of being tech savvy also means having common sense. Don’t use those passwords for your own passwords! And don’t use the same password for everything. :)

Thanks everyone! I’ll see you all on Tuesday.

Weekly Update 01/18/10
